Will Gun Club Road ever be widened to four lanes? For homeowners that travel Gun Club road from southeast Aurora to the major employment centers (Buckley AFB, University of Colorado, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, etc. in northern Aurora, traffic can be a nightmare at times. This is especially true during any type of lousy weather...you will always see numerous cars that have slid off the road or into each other. Since this only a two lane road, any type of traffic accident will result in traffic backups. With all of the trash trucks rumbling down the road to the Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site (DADS), in addition to the construction traffic, one is always "stuck in the slow lane." One would also think that the amount of traffic of Gun Club is a safety hazard. If one doubts this, count the number of crosses that have been planted on the side of the road.
With all of the new mid to upper-end developments in southeast Aurora, why would Aurora approve all of this new housing without the constructing the necessary roads to get people in and out of their develpments? The current north/south corridor requires one to either travel up the toll road, take Gun Club, or detour to the east and take Tower. There are rumors that Gun Club road can't be widened due to some agreement with the E-470 Toll Road. If true, when does this agreement end? This seems plausible as the E-470 toll authority may not want Gun Club as a competitor for traffic. Another excuse from various officials is that Gun Club is owned by different entities. This may include the City of Aurora, State of Colorado, and maybe even the City of Denver and/or Arapahoe County. As a result, they infer that it is very difficult to make the necessary upgrades. Although government budgets are being stretched to the limit due to other needs, one hopes that the appropriate governments could put their heads together and find a solution. One possible solution would be to impact the developers for all of these new communities in southeast Aurora. The homeowners are already being taxed via the "Metro Assocation" fees for their internal infrastructure and even major roads...look who is paying for Aurora Parkway and maybe even portions of Arapahoe. There is a sign near Aurora Parkway that states that the homeowners within Tallyn's Reach are paying approximately $324,000 for just a short stretch of this road. Maybe its time for the developers to loosen their pocketbooks and be part of the solution.
